Public drinking fountains and bottle refill stations are one of the cheapest, greenest pieces of urban infrastructure — and one of the least well-mapped. This page is a live editorial snapshot of what PublicUtilFinder aggregates about them: where our coverage is strongest, how the data is sourced, and how researchers, journalists, and city planners can build on top of it.

Fountains are pulled live from OSM tags (amenity=drinking_water, drinking_water=yes) and supplemented by user status reports.
Each map view is fetched from Overpass at request time — no stale cached snapshot in the primary read path.
All data on this page is open — under the OpenStreetMap ODbL license plus community contributions.
Each of the cities below has a dedicated water-fountain landing page with a live map view. We don't publish a fabricated per-city fountain count here — the underlying Overpass query is what renders the real map, and the tally shifts as OSM contributors add and correct data. Follow a city link to see its live count.

PublicUtilFinder aggregates public-utility location data from a small number of trusted open sources. For drinking fountains and bottle refill stations, the primary source is OpenStreetMap. We query the Overpass API at request time for the current map viewport using tags like amenity=drinking_water and drinking_water=yes, then overlay real-time community status reports (working / limited / not working) collected from PublicUtilFinder users.
For EV chargers we additionally use Open Charge Map and the U.S. Department of Energy's NREL Alternative Fuels Data Center. Those sources do not cover water fountains.
OpenStreetMap data is © OpenStreetMap contributors, distributed under the Open Database License (ODbL). Any downstream use of coverage figures derived from this page must preserve that attribution.
All the data behind this site is open. Nothing here sits behind a paywall or an account gate, and there is no proprietary “PublicUtilFinder-only” layer we hold back for enterprise buyers.
